01 — What it is

A control network for staying steady.

Discovered in the early 1990s, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a signalling network found in every mammal — dogs, cats, horses, and humans alike. Its job is homeostasis: keeping the body's internal conditions in a stable, healthy range no matter what's happening outside.

It has three moving parts, working as a loop:

02 — The receptors

Two families of receptors, two jobs.

Nearly every effect of the ECS runs through two receptor types. Where they sit determines what they do.

CBD1

Brain & nervous system

Central Nervous System · Spine · Gut

Concentrated in the brain and along the nervous system. CB1 receptors shape how stress is felt, how mood settles, and how pain signals are turned up or down.

CBD2

Immune & body

Immune Cells · Gut · Joints · Skin

Found on immune cells and throughout the body's tissues. CB2 receptors govern inflammation — the body's response to injury, irritation, and wear.

03 — The feedback loop

How the body finds its way back.

The ECS is a demand system. It doesn't run constantly — it switches on when something pulls the body off balance, and switches off once balance returns.

A stressor hits

Fireworks, a vet visit, an aching joint, a bad night's sleep — the body drifts from its set-point.

Step 02

The ECS responds

Cells release endocannabinoids on demand, right where they're needed.

Step 03

Receptors engage

They bind CB1 and CB2, dialling the relevant systems up or down to correct the drift.

Step 04

Back to balance

Enzymes clear the messengers, the signal ends, and the body rests at its baseline again.

04 — Where CBD fits

A top-up, not a takeover.

Sometimes the ECS can't keep up — chronic stress, age, or persistent inflammation can outpace the body's own supply of endocannabinoids. Researchers call this a state of low endocannabinoid tone.

Plant cannabinoids like CBD interact with the same system — supporting receptor activity and slowing the breakdown of the body's own messengers. Rather than forcing a result, they help the ECS do the job it was already built to do: return to balance.
